25th Case of Human Bird Flu Checks out of Hospital
Thursday, March 22, 2007
10-year-old Amira A. Nayel checked out of hospital, Thursday March 22 after being treated from bird flu infection. This is the 25th case to have occurred in Egypt since February 2006.
Another case is still being treated at Mansheyat al-Bakri Hospital. 2-and-a-half-year-old Youssef Mahmoud is expected to leave the hospital next week.
Amira tested positive for avian flu virus on March 14 as a result of being in close contact with infected domesticated poultry. She was suffering from high temperature and muscle aches when she entered the Aswan Fever Hospital. The child was later referred to the Mansheyat al-Bakri Hospital, where she was given the drug Tamiflu. An epidemiological study was carried out on all members of her family.
The Mansheyat al-Bakri Hospital earlier received 9 cases out of a total of 26. Of the 26 cases, 13 died and the remaining number was treated.
A section at the Mansheyat al-Bakri Hospital has been set up to treat children with bird flu infection. It should be noted that early detection of avian flu is instrumental in ensuring treatment.
